Real Long Run Territory

Please tell me you are experiencing the super awesome Spring-like weather that we are getting here in Nova Scotia! And "yes" to my Florida and California blogger friends, we call 7 degrees Celsius warm! LOL.

Signs I KNOW Spring IS coming this year:
  • I killed 2 spiders today......eek! One MAY have been sucked up with the vacuum....maybe.
  • When I walked Lola around sunset yesterday, a raccoon ran out in front of us and proceeded up my neighbours driveway!
  • Squirrels were everywhere on my run today.
  • I saw a bazillion blue jays today. :)
So there you have it. We are not locked in a permanent winter deep freeze. Spring will be here!

Long-run fuel today:  I promise there IS oatmeal underneath the berries.

Her new favourite spot, {eye roll}. When is Lola going to learn that crying by the food cupboard does not guarantee treats?!?!

Matt is always so supportive when I have a long run to do....lol. We both had 16 miles to log today!

We have been absolutely blessed with spectacular weather this weekend! My only complaint is that I have no clue how to appropriately dress during temperature transitions. Yesterday's run had me roasting so today I figured I'd leave my 'heat-generating' tights and pull over, along with the gloves, at home. :S

I layered with a clima-warm Adidas long sleeve and my Run Like a Girl fluorescent green pop over. No gloves today! How brave am I??? ;)

Since everyone in Canada was tuned into hockey this morning, there were virtually no cars or runners out on my route for the first hour and a bit. All of a sudden there were cars cruising along the main road. I said to myself, "I bet hockey is over." So as I ran by a convenience store, a lady was out shaking the rug by the door and I said, "Is hockey done?" She replies, "Yah, WE WON!" I said, "Yay!" and ran off. It was sort of funny.
My run felt really good today. I dressed perfectly for the air temperature and the plan was to run easy. Since I wasn't going for speed I decided to incorporate as much of a hilly route as possible. I even tackled one particular hill that I haven't run since the summer because of how daunting it is! I'm highly considering this one for my hill repeats on Tuesday. We'll see.

I almost got hit by a crazy driver with only 1.3 miles to home! Then I was shaking uncontrollably for the rest of the run.  Thanks dude! {there totally needs to be a sarcasm font!}

My new favourite shake came to the rescue when I hobbled in the door.

Week 4/12 for Boston Bound is complete---Boom!

I've read in the past and again very recently about how you have entered 'Real Long Run Territory' once you get up around 16 miles. This is the point at which your body starts making physiological changes that benefit an endurance athlete. This is also coincidentally the point at which I feel like I've escaped death post-run...lol. 14 miles seems like a 'no big deal' type of run that I could do every weekend. But after my 16 miler, I'm toast! Plus, my stomach gets all queasy in a very not-so-fun way. :S

My attempt to recover as I blog:

Lastly, if you have a weak stomach, stop reading...lol. Matt texted me this photo following his 16 miler!
Ouch! Funny thing is that before Matt left he reminded me to use a Band-Aid beneath my sports bra, above the abs where I usually chafe. I guess I'll have to remind him of the same thing next Sunday!

Thanks so much for dropping by to visit GGR. Have a beautiful day!

How was your weekend long run?
Do you have a specific area where your body chafes?
Does your pet try to manipulate you for food??? lol
Have you had any close calls with a car on your run?

Happy Running,
Heather :)
The Hypothermic Half marathon is next Sunday!

  1. Awesome long run!
Crappy temps in AB, but deceivingly beautiful sunshine :(
When I was young, my dad would vaccume spiders, and it always freaked me out because I was scared they would live and then put their eggs in the vaccume and have spiders come spilling out the hose. I think I saw that scene (spiders spilling out) in a horror movie and it stuck with me.

    1. Thanks Amie!

And now I'm scared there will be spider eggs in my vacuum!!! lol. That Arachnophobia movie really freaked me out as a kid. :0

  2. Ha ha ha "gross Matt, gross!" Your hockey story made me chuckle! I used to chafe along my bra line... no more thanks to BodyGlide! I have countless close calls with cars. I swear Alberta drivers are the worst in Canada!

    1. LOL......he usually puts band aids on for marathons. The first time I saw this I was totally mortified!

Today I didn't chafe on the front of my bra line, but the back hurt super bad when I showered :S

Some drivers seem to veer close to you just to say, "get out of the road!" (eye roll)

  3. The note from Matt made me smile...cute! I guess you also know you've entered longer miles when that happens to Matt. I agree with Crystal....gross! I definitely over dressed for the race today...I should have worn a tshirt. Some were in tank and shorts by the end of the race!

  4. Awesome post Heather. Love the pic of Lola :) My two dogs and cat try that every now and then but it never works.

I use compression shirt and shorts on all my long runs and races and so far, chafe-free! guess I just don't like the sticky vaseline feeling.

    1. Thanks Stan! Lola sure does love the spotlight...lol.

For a marathon I use Vaseline and Matt uses band aids. Sometimes on a long run I find that I'm so worried about getting my gear all together I neglect to protect the chafe areas. :( next time!

  5. I'm going to be picking your brain about how to eat SUPER long runs for breakfast when my training officially starts!

All those signs of spring sound so lovely. Especially all the wildlife waking up!

LMAO, poor Matt. Those stains look painful!

    1. For sure! So far oats with berries is the best for me.

I'm super duper ready for Spring to arrive. This weekend is such a tease.

LOL.....he says it doesn't hurt until he showers! Crazy :0

  6. Oh no! Your husband needs some Vaseline pronto! Poor dude! I always chafe under my sports bra. I hate to admit it but last year when I started my training for my first half I didn't know what chafing was. It would hurt every time I came home and showered. I would put ointment and band aids on before running, but it never helped. Then I finally asked a runner group and they were like it is "chafing" use Vaseline or Bodyglide. Yup, I felt like a complete idiot!!

    1. Ha, we have so much Vaseline and so many band aids. I just think he can't be bothered! Maybe next time he'll come requesting it..lol.

  7. So jealous of your nice weather! It definitely was snowing and cold on my run on Saturday...I don't remember training last year being this cold. Or maybe I just blocked it out :) Glad you are okay and didn't actually get hit! Did the driver make it seem like it was your fault? Ouchers to your husbands nipples too!

    1. Don't worry, it didnt' last long! It's freezing here now...lol.

I'm going to be extra super careful and keep in mind that not everyone is watching for runners. ;)

  8. Okay, I'm an idiot and forgot that the degrees is in celsius.... not AS cold as I was thinking, but still pretty chilly. ;-) Do drivers just not care about runners? Because I swear when I was running today the cars would almost swerve toward me instead of away from me. Sixteen miles sounds like SO far to me who's longest run has been 13.1 miles. Tell Matt I hope his nipples feel better soon! I bet that's one of the weirder things that has been said to him from a stranger on the internet!

    1. You are not an idiot! lol.

And I'm certain most drivers do not care and I'm sure some purposely come close to 'scare' you off the road. :S

      Haha, I'll tell him!

I have to tell you, I have an IG friend who is super determined to run Boston as well but is currently wearing a boot because of a foot injury. :S She's training in the pool right now. I think there's still hope yet!

  10. I didn't have a close call with a car but I was running with a friend in a 5k and she did. She was listening to her headphones and running across the road at an intersection and not paying attention and the guy nearly blew through the stop sign. I yelled at her to watch out and she jumped out of the way just in the nick of time. One of the reasons I don't wear headphones whil running outside! CAPS = sarcastic font (at least for me lol)

    1. Oh my gosh scary!
I will take the CAPS option for sure, lol.

  11. My first thought was, "I'd be so mad if I bled on my Boston shirt!" Ha. Great runs this weekend! I also have a hard time deciding what to wear this time of year.... mostly because it can be sunny and 50 one day and snowing and 10 the next. Silly Colorado.

  12. I love the motivational message! I used to have problems along the band of sports bras but I don't with the Nike Pro bras so I don't use body glide as freakishly often as I used to haha.
